Appropriate Instructional Settings

Reasonable progress toward graduation, respect for others, and responsible behavior are required of every Virginia Internet High School student.  Based on the student's demonstrated willingness to learn and behave, the principal and teacher will ensure that each student is scheduled into the most appropriate instructional setting.  It is understood that the conventional classroom may, at times, not be an appropriate assignment for students who

  1. fail more than half of their classes in the school term,
  2. do not attend regularly,
  3. refuse to obey school or class rules,
  4. interfere with the education of others, or
  5. pose a threat to themselves or others.

Assigned Enrollment

Students who can not function safely or successfully in their conventional classroom will be moved to one or more equivalent classes within the building, off-campus, or at home.  Parents are to be notified in writing when the administration and classroom teacher believes a transfer to a non-conventional setting will be necessary if the student's behavior and/or performance does not improve.  After notification any additional incidents will result in the student's immediate assignment to a more appropriate instructional setting.

Students who pose a threat to others will immediately be moved to a restricted instructional setting for the remainder of the school term. Any student reassigned as a threat to others may not move to a less restrictive setting before demonstrating satisfactory academic progress and a willingness to work with others. Students reassigned for a second incident must complete the remainder of their high school studies in the most restrictive instructional setting.

STUDENTS ASSIGNED to a non-conventional instructional setting for non-attendance, poor performance, or inappropriate behavior must successfully complete a term of study before re-entering conventional classes.

Elective Enrollment

As our conventional classroom teachers elect to post their classwork and assignments in their online classrooms, the Virginia Internet High School will allow students who have teacher approval to enroll as "exclusively-online" student under the following circumstances. Note: "Online students" must make arrangements at the convenience of the teacher to take tests, examinations, or other assessments.

Schedule Conflict Resolution: Students who need a class to complete their schedule may with teacher, parent, and administrative approval enroll and take the class from a computer station.

Closed Sections: Rather that overload a full section or deny a student a desired class, the student may with teacher, parent, and adminstrative approval enroll and take the class from a computer station during an open period or after school.

Long-Term Illness, Hospitalization, or disability: Students confined for illness may with approval of teachers, parents, and administration enroll online and continue their classes via computer.

Home-schoolers: Home-schooled students with the approval of the local school board, administration, and teacher may enroll as online students. Students will be proctored when tests, exams, and other teacher-designated activities are conducted.

Transfer Students: Students who transfer during the year from or to a high school using a different scheduling format may with parental, administrative, and teacher approval complete their original classes as online students. Teacher must approve arrangements for testing and completing teacher-designated activities.
